Technology Description
WirlWind (WIReLess Wide area INciDent network) is a system that provides wireless TCP/IP data and voice communications to forest firefighters and emergency personnel in areas where no such infrastructure exists or the infrastructure has been disabled. It addresses the unique communication needs in emergency response situations, such as rapid deployment, easy to use interfaces, GPS location information, personnel and resource tracking, integration with existing emergency communications systems, and flexibility to support any command structure. The system complements or replaces the two-way radios typically used in such situations, providing the advantages of multi-vendor interoperability, interconnection to standard communications systems (i.e., telephones and Internet), and data communications.
