Magnetic Nanoparticles for Cancer Detection

Columbus NanoWorks
  • Technology Description

This technology is a system for producing “high resolution magnetic nanoparticles for use in [a] Quadrupole Magnetic Sorting device.” CNW produces highly magnetic nanoparticles for cancer diagnostics, imaging, and therapeutics. The material can also be used for cellular enrichments and separations.

  • Value Proposition

This technology uses magnetic nanoparticles to isolate metastasized cancer cells from a patient’s blood sample. It is a novel method of the detection of metastasized cancer and circulating tumor cells. Clinical pathologists could use this technology to detect and diagnose cancer. A blood sample is drawn from the patient, CNW’s magnetic nanoparticles are introduced, and then the sample is run through a high-throughput cell separation device-the Quadrupole Magnetic Sorter. Once the cancer cells are isolated, they can be placed on slides; the slides would be examined by the pathologist.
